How the Internet Changed Fashion Media

Giulina Sertl

The invention of the internet forever changed most industries, but especially the fashion industry. Prior to the invention of the internet the fashion industry was really a closed off industry only available to the elite. Throughout the invention of the internet and social media platforms the fashion industry has become much more democratized and diverse for the better.

Before the internet if you wanted to learn about fashion and consume fashion media you didn't have a ton of options, unless you were privileged enough to travel from city to city seeing new collections. Your only option besides that was to buy fashion magazines and go look at new collections in stores. The industry was really closed off and only open to a select few based on who you knew, your family, and money.

Today thanks to the internet there is an abundance of fashion media out there to consume. There are podcasts, Youtube videos, TikToks, Instagram posts, fashion shows online, articles, blogs, documentaries, and magazines all online. And if those are still not enough individuals can easily create their own platforms like commentary Youtube channels, fashion podcasts, blogs, etc. The options are basically endless. The best thing about these options above is that they are all relatively free and easy to access, as long as you have access to the internet and a device like a smart phone or computer.

The industry does still has a long way to go in terms of becoming more diverse and sustainable, but changes are headed in the right direction and its positive to see more seats at the table being opened up to individuals who never had a chance before.
